The many-pointed star at the center of a compass is called a “rose-of-wind,” as each cardinal direction was believed in ancient times to have its own corresponding named wind. The northernmost wind on the Mariner’s Windrose is named “Tramontana,” and so early compasses were labelled with a “T” for north instead of an “N.”
