Body Language
Ambiguity and contradiction; the near anonymity of your model, her face in shadow, with the confident elegance of her shaven scalp -- the highlights proclaiming femininity, with a rapid falloff wherein there is a suggestion of assertiveness in her pose, yet with the positioning of her right arm, the mood could be interpreted as one of either reflection, protective self-awareness, or any of a number of other emotions, and that is a wonderful strength in this image, in incorporating feeling and emotion -- brilliantly done, Philip, both you and your model -- it shows what can be done with both craft and care, and that photography can still be an Art, deliberately upper-case <3
Those 150 words (or so) are inadequate, but the moment had it's own demands, and it is what was done. This image requires thought, to do anything less would be an injustice, and for that, I truly thank you!
Thank-you so much! You are the Susan Sontag or the John Szarkowski of figure photography critique. I've spent a lot of time listening to experts and renowned photographers (former curator myself) and I find it all too rare that viewers of modern photography really delve into the dynamics of an image. Good critique actually helps the reviewer see their own work better both intrinsically, technically and artistically. Here's to keeping us on track! Appreciate your in-depth approach however subjective. This is what makes the art world go-round. My sincerest appreciation to you for such a beautiful approach to imaging art.
