In the Greek myth, Persephone was captured by Hades and taken to the Underworld. Tricked into eating six pomegranate seeds, she was required to spend six months of the year in the Underworld, during which time her mother Demeter allowed the earth to become barren. When Persephone returned to earth, Demeter rejoiced, good weather returned, and crops grew again. The cycle of seasons was born.
