In standard newspaper and magazine printing, photographs are rendered as dots of varying sizes called half-toning. Half-toning used to be done in the darkroom using various "sizes" of overlays called "half-tone screens." Once the image was exposed through the half-tone screen, it would be processed normally and an image would be printed that looked much like this.
