Jean-Marie Bottequin comes from the country of the Belgian symbolists whose mysterious whispering has reached over the century into the fin-de-siècle-mood.
His compositions are looking at the person from the inside, maybe like then could have done so Maeterlinck, Rodenbach or Verhaeren in songs, not in words. All his photocompositions are like visible sounds, his art is like poetry rising like music over your head and seducing us to find the key to a completely new contemplation. Suddenly after the morbid paleness of a hyperbolic mind and its bloquage have disappeared, we are under the spell of light and shadow and the feeling comes.

The turnaway from the materialistic ideology has been achieved, the impact of the spoken word is no longer sufficient. All secret wishes and thoughts buried in minds of the progressive human being are reanimated in a chaotic civilization.
With his oeuvre J.-M. B. breaks all tabus and sets new signs. In spite of a rapid liberalisation going on in our society there are still more tabus than people admit He does a bold pointing out of more or less visible objects, newly discovered for the eye that has lost its sensibility for beautyness. A new world is established around the old one.

Not just regarding the photographs of J.-M. B but allowing them to get hold of you is his purpose. There is a realitiy behind reality and we can never understand this world, we have to live in, with our ratio.
