about Alan Frank

Male

I began taking photographs, aged 14, in 1962. I used the families ‘Box Brownie’ and roll film. Four years later I bought a Russian made ‘Cosmik 35’, a 35mm camera, my first in a long line. I am now 76 so have taken photographs for 62 years.
I always have loved beauty, which with a camera, I saw in such things as landscapes, butterflies, frost on windows, raindrops on leaves, abstract patterns in the sand.
After leaving school early (which I found boring) I become a litho printer but after 5 years, I became interested in Philosophy and went to University to do a degree. After 2 years, I married, started a family and dropped out of Uni becoming a stockman with my own herd of beef cattle.
After 7 years I got interested in woodwork started my own business making wooden furniture and toys. Then moved into the theatre as Master Carpenter, making sets for operas, ballets and plays. At 40, decided to train as a teacher. Went back to University trained in Fine Art, Philosophy and Aesthetics, specialised in sculpture, went on to do a Master’s Degree in sculpture then a teaching qualification. Taught in secondary schools, then Further Education then finally as a Senior University Lecturer teaching Critical Studies to BA Photography students. Eventually going on to being Course Leader in Photography.
In my mid 50’s decided to move to France. Worked with a builder, learned the skills and rebuilt and developed stone barns into holiday Gites. In my mid 60’s returned to the UK. Took up dance. Trained in Contemporary Dance and then specialised in Butoh – a form of Japanese Contemporary Dance
I decided to take up photography seriously in 2023, trained with a woman portrait photographer. In March 2024 I took my first art nude photograph.
I am still learning, enjoying the process, and being part of the amazing Model Society family. Beauty is still my aspiration, my driving force. Beauty in people of all ages, all colours all genders. I want to see beauty in the world and try, with the images that are created as collaborations with my models, to show the world as a better place.
