about John Austin

Male

Although primarily engaged in environmental documentation since 1994 I have been working with naked women on an occasional basis since 1970.

My work continues to be film based and mainly with square format cameras for the work with women. The prints are all made in a traditional darkroom. I take great care over the making of my prints, but unfortunately most of the tonality is lost in transfer to digital media.

I have included a link to an essay regarding my approach to my work.

Currently, and due to the increasing neo-prudery in Australia, my three portfolios of women are hidden on my website.

Prints are available, but ONLY as real silver gelatine prints from a real darkroom. If there is a marked improvement in the top end digi-printing machines this may change.

  • Welcome to Model Society! Your portfolio is beautiful! Can't wait to see how you branch out into the community :) Let us know if we can help with anything along the way!

    • Actually there is a branching I am interested in.

Working within many fields the fact that I have worked with women has been deleterious to my career exhibiting and publishing.

I have written a prolegomenon about this subject, which is an area I would like to see explored more deeply.

The current state is at https://www.jbaphoto.com.au/blog/stories/nu-depiction-of-women

There is a more lighthearted blog post at https://www.jbaphoto.com.au/blog/stories/kat-in-the-casts-2011-picture-story

Currently the three folios of women on my website are not open for viewing because of the PC attitudes currently operating in Australia

    • It's always so interesting to hear artists talk about their work and their process. Thanks for sharing this! I think you're in the right place to explore this with other artists!

    • I would like to see MS have a forum section where issues like the place of our work in current arts practice be discussed, I can't be the only person wanting such a forum

    • We do have a bulletin board for announcements and collaboration opportunities. In the menu bar just select "Explore" then select the "Travel & Casting" tab.
