Joel Thompson is an accomplished visual communicator in fine art, fine art photography, and graphic design. He has been an artist since childhood and became a professional artist in 1970 when he received his first paid commission. He attributes his natural talents to his father’s artistic DNA. As an experienced artist, Joel covers a wide range of subject matter, and artistic mediums-- including oils and acrylics, graphite, watercolors, and pastels. His forte is portraiture, and he currently excepts private portrait commissions. Much of his work includes portraits of indigenous people which explores the life and tribal cultures from around the world. For decades he has researched and collected photo reference on indigenous tribes of people in extremely remote areas in and around the continent of Africa. Their culture and traditions are reflected Joel's paintings and illustrations as he wishes to share with his viewing public, the beauty and richness of a people not yet influenced by modern society. Photography has always been an integral part of his artistic expression. With the advent of digital technology, Joel has taken his creative skills to a new level with the creation of digitally painted images. To him, the digital camera is an artistic tool to create electronic imagery as an art form.
